The influence of emotional orthographic neighbourhood in visual word recognition

چکیده
The aim was to investigate the activation spread between the orthographic lexicon and theaffective system by means of emotional orthographic neighbourhood. Target words with aneutral emotional valence (e.g., tenace, fuseau) were selected so that they had only one higher-frequency orthographic neighbour with either a negative valence (e.g., menace) or a neutralvalence (e.g., fuseau). All target words were presented in a primed lexical decision task, either preceded by their neighbour or by a control prime during 66 or 166 ms. The mainfinding was the inhibitory effect of negative emotional orthographic neighbourhood. Targetword responses were delayed when the valence of the neighbour was negative rather thanneutral. The data also indicated an inhibitory orthographic neighbourhood priming effect thatwas enhanced by prime duration. The results are discussed within an interactive-activationframework of visual word recognition adapted to affective processing.L'objectif est d'étudier la propagation de l'activation entre le lexique orthographique etle système affectif au moyen du voisinage orthographique émotionnel.

The present study investigated the role of phonological and orthographic neighbourhood density in visual word recognition. Three mechanisms were identified that predict distinct facilitatory or inhibitory effects of each variable. The lexical competition account predicts overall inhibitory effects of neighbourhood density. The global activation (familiarity) account predicts overall facilitator...
متن کاملModulation of brain activity by multiple lexical and word form variables in visual word recognition: A parametric fMRI study
Psycholinguistic research has documented a range of variables that influence visual word recognition performance. Many of these variables are highly intercorrelated. Most previous studies have used factorial designs, which do not exploit the full range of values available for continuous variables, and are prone to skewed stimulus selection as well as to effects of the baseline (e.g. when contra...
متن کاملImpact of L2 Reading Proficiency on L1 Transfer in Visual Word Recognition
Reading, in any language, is a complex process. Reading in a second language is even more complicated because of the cross-linguistic influences that come from the reader’s two (or more) languages. In particular, cross-linguistic influences have been shown to affect word recognition processes. Much research has shown that properties of a reader’s first language, especially the writing system, c...
متن کاملThe nature of the syllabic neighbourhood effect in French.
We investigated whether and how sublexical units such as phonological syllables mediate access to the lexicon in French visual word recognition. To do so, two lexical decision task (LDT) experiments examined the nature of the syllabic neighbourhood effect. In Experiments 1a and b, the number of higher frequency syllabic neighbours was manipulated while controlling for the first bigram. The resu...
متن کاملThe effects of orthographic neighborhood in reading and laboratory word identification tasks: A review
This paper reviews recent research on the effects of “orthographic neighbors” (i.e., words that can be created by changing one letter of the stimulus item, preserving letter positions, see Coltheart et al., 1977) on reading and laboratory word identification tasks. We begin this paper with a literature review on the two basic “neighborhood” effects (neighborhood size and neighborhood frequency)...
